October started very busily for the Chiang Mai International Rotary Club. We updated its Child Protection Policy and organized a child protection training/workshop for our members and volunteers. The session took place on October 4, 2022. We discussed Rotary International policies, why it is necessary to refresh our knowledge and the do's and don'ts when volunteering with children. There were interactive roundtable discussions and a follow-up quiz.
CMIRC officially submitted a joint Global Grant application with the Rotary Club of Fig Garden, California, and the Integrated Tribal Development Foundation as a project partner. We are keeping our fingers crossed for early approval.
The School Vision Screening team went on a well-deserved two-week fall break since the Chiang Mai municipal schools had a break too. We will get back to business at the Wat Pa Phaeng School, our next screening location on November 2.
A kind CMIRC supporter, Sarah, donated a laptop to our club. Service Projects Chair Colin Jarvis is evaluating which of our projects is in the greatest need of a technology upgrade. Thank you, Sarah, for your generous donation! We will find a good home for it with one of our project partners.
I am delighted to announce that our 2022 Children’s Winter Clothing Appeal launched on October 15, 2022. We collect warm clothes, shoes, and blankets and deliver them to children and youth living in the mountains of Northern Thailand. The initiative runs until December 1. Rotarian Gary stepped up to assist Past President and Project Champion Dylan in his daily routine of picking up donations. Thank you, Gary! We appreciate your efforts. Do you have clothes to donate, or are you looking to contribute in other ways? Connect with us for more details.
We commemorated World Polio Day on October 24, listening to a presentation by our fellow CMIRC Rotarian Kim White. For those of you who may not know, Kim grew up in India, where his mother fell ill with polio. Kim spoke about how the disease affected his life and turned him onto helping people living with paralysis. We also gained insight into some of his charitable projects through two well-put-together videos. What is more, Rotarian Myrna introduced a team-building line dance to Achy Breaky Heart – a must-watch!
The Chiang Mai International Rotary Club is preparing for the return of our super fun and popular fundraiser, the Golf Ball Drop. The event will take place on November 5, 2022, at the Chiang Mai Expats Club Barbecue at Horizon Village & Resort. Golf balls cost 1,000 Bt a piece. You do not need to be present to win.
