John Schorr

CMIRC President Owen Hodgson, donor Bill Lanz, local partner Warm Heart staff members Evelind, Da, and PJ, along with CMIRC Children's Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Project Champion John Schorr, attended the Children's Water Safety & Drowning Prevention Program Certificate Ceremony held at the Phrao District Offices. During the event, certificates were proudly awarded to over 300 4th-grade students from 12 schools across Phrao, celebrating their successful completion of the swim course.

The Children's Water Safety & Drowning Prevention Program extended beyond certificate ceremonies, with high school students at Wat Suan Dok School engaging in practical swimming lessons. Over six days of training, 45 students from grades 4/1 and 4/2 participated, including:

  • Grade 4/1: 13 boys and 9 girls

  • Grade 4/2: 12 boys and 11 girls

Under expert guidance, students practiced key skills designed to build confidence and safety in the water. Activities included:

  • Water blowing: Learning how to exhale underwater effectively.

  • Foam board exercises: Grabbing foam boards, bending forward, kicking their legs, and blowing water to build foundational swimming techniques.

  • Needlefish kicks: Developing efficient leg movements for swimming.

  • Puppy-style water entry: Allowing students to choose their comfort level, practicing looking up or blowing bubbles as they adjusted to being in the water.

  • Back floating with kicks: Enhancing buoyancy and propulsion while building self-reliance.

These lessons are a vital part of the broader CMIRC initiative to equip students with life-saving water safety skills and reduce drowning risks. The program not only fosters safety but also builds confidence and resilience in young learners.

The dedication of the trainers and the enthusiasm of the students illustrate the lasting impact of community-driven projects like this one.
