Supporting Earthquake Recovery Efforts in Myanmar

The Chiang Mai International Rotary Club (CMIRC) operates with limited funds, but thanks to the generosity of past members who remembered us in their wills, we’re able to support specific causes when the need is urgent. The recent 7.7 magnitude earthquake near Mandalay, Myanmar, is one such situation.

Bob Carroll, a former CMIRC member and long-time seasonal resident of Chiang Mai, included us in his will with funds designated for two initiatives: the Children’s Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Program and the Burma Children’s Medical Fund (BCMF).

When Director Kanchana Thornton of BCMF reached out about their earthquake recovery programs in the Mandalay area and the urgent need for funding, CMIRC was able to respond with a 140,000 Baht (US$4,100) donation.

CMIRC is deeply aware that many donations to Myanmar often fail to reach those in need. That’s why our long-standing, trusted partnership with BCMF is so valuable. Bob Carroll understood this too and made BCMF a named beneficiary in his bequest. During his time in Chiang Mai, he also generously donated his time, money, and materials to support their work.

We look forward to sharing updates from BCMF in upcoming newsletters. If you’re interested in supporting BCMF’s ongoing earthquake recovery projects through CMIRC, please contact John Schorr, CMIRC Fundraising Chair, at johnkschorr@gmail.com.
