September 2025: Basic Education & Literacy in Rotary

Updated: Sep 15

ree

This September, as part of the 2025-26 Rotary Calendar, we focus on Basic Education & Literacy Month — one of Rotary’s key Areas of Focus.

Why Basic Education & Literacy Matter

Education is the foundation for peace, opportunity, and community well-being.

Having access to basic education and literacy:

  • Helps individuals gain essential life skills — reading, writing, critical thinking — that empower them to participate fully in society.

  • Narrows gaps in gender, economic, and geographic disparity. Ensures education access for all, especially marginalized or disadvantaged groups.

  • Enhances health, economic development, civic participation, and intergenerational progress. Literate societies tend to have better health outcomes, more stable democracies, and more resilient economies.

What Rotary Is Doing & How CMIRC Connects

Rotary globally carries out projects in this theme through:

  • Building or refurbishing schools; providing classroom supplies; teacher training.

  • Supporting adult literacy programs, especially for those who missed out on early schooling.

  • Focusing on reducing gender disparities in education — ensuring girls have equal access.

For CMIRC, this theme connects directly with many of our ongoing programs:

  • School Vision Screening — helping children see clearly so they can learn more effectively.

  • Education support in remote or disadvantaged communities — through donations in kinds - stationery, school uniforms, books, or sponsoring school lunches.

  • Programs with our partners to build or improve educational facilities such as a library.

Ways You Can Take Action This September

CMIRC members and supporters can make a difference through:

  1. Donating or collecting educational materials — books, stationery, school supplies — for local schools or learning centers.

  2. Volunteering your time

  3. Promoting literacy awareness — helping spread the word about literacy campaigns; inviting speakers; engaging local communities.

  4. Partnering with local NGOs or community centers that work in education and literacy.
